Random Ramblings.... The Sequel.

What's a good opening line? I realize it's been over a year since I last wrote something on here. It doesn't feel like that long ago at all. It's been a pretty fantastic first year in Winnipeg, and I'm slowly easing into the creative pocket I hoped to find here.

Mixing of the new songs is almost done. Just the final touches on a couple of songs. I got a little carried away editing the drum track for Tin Can Phone, so some repairs are in order. All in all, I'm very pleased with how the songs are turning out. It's been awesome having Shane help me out on mixing and producing these songs. I've learned alot as we've been working on this record. It's fascinating to get someone else's perspective, hear what you've recorded through their ears, and how they would make it sound.

All these new tricks I've learned have only served to inspire me.Time not spent on unscrambling the technical aspect is time that can be spent writing and creativity. I don't have the patience for figuring out recording and mixing techniques like I used. Maybe I'm just getting older and the technology curve is passing me by. Or maybe I'm just indecisive.

The next step is sending off the songs and album art to get it pressed and ready. I can't wait for that moment when I'm holding the finished record in my hand. That is going to be a gratifying moment. I've been writing and working on these songs for about the past six years now. I'm putting them in chronological order on the record as well, so it's like a metaphorical play-by-play of the last chaotic years.

I really need to get some shows coming up soon as well. I'll email a bunch of places around the city and get something organized.

If you've read this far, I hope I've shared something to entertain you. What entertains me? (I realize it may be a literary faux pas to ask yourself questions, but should I care?). I really enjoyed reading Neil Young's autobiography "Waging Heavy Peace". I always enjoy the mundane details in artist's bios. Hearing a legend like Neil talk about something like his first car or what he had for lunch that day just fascinates me. It brings them down to a more human level. They are not these ten foot tall icons that I always make them out to be.

As for music, I go from obsession to obsession. Phases I can barely keep up with. I'm currently listening to a lot of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The first rock n' roll I ever heard was "Hard Promises" back in the day, and I've been hooked ever since. Also diggin' Jeff Lynne's production. The background vocals on "Learning To Fly" are just flawless.

That's all I have to say right now. I'm hungry and I have to go check if my beer is cold yet. Stay tuned for more new music and other updates and random ramblings.

Recording and Such.......

So recording is going very well these days. Stumbled into an opportunity to borrow a drum kit through a friend of mine (Thanks Wess and Ron!), and I am having a great time working on some drum tracks. It can be quite frustrating trying to get all four limbs to work in unison though, I must say. I now have three songs done for the record - Berlin, Incomplete Pair, and Slip Of The Tongue, and I am really happy with how they have all turned out. Now to get the other 10 finished.....

I am also now the proud owner of "stevewiebemusic.com", so I will have to get my techie hat on and start building a new website. The more I do this music thing the more I realize how much work is involved, that has nothing to do with writing or recording music. Trying to promote yourself and get your music out there, getting shows lined up, updating a website, and trying to stay on the pulse of a local music scene. Moving to Winnipeg will be great for getting more shows and becoming a part of a larger artistic community.

Living in a small town has been a slice, but spending many weekends in Winnipeg this last while has just got me itching for something more. These next few months will be chaotic, for sure. Considering I have no idea where I will be working or living in the next few months is quite terrifying but also exciting! I am learning to embrace the unknown. It certainly has been an inspiring time. I am writing and recording more than I ever have before, and I already have songs I am working on for the next record. But for now, I must complete "Happy Accidents", and it will be done this summer! Stay tuned.........
